So, you’ve got your friends together, snacks on the table, and the mood is set for a round of The Imposter. But before you dive in, there’s always that one lingering question: “How many imposters should we have?”
Get the setup wrong, and the game ends before the fun begins. We’ve put together a no-fail guide to help you set up the game perfectly every time—no matter how many people are playing.
Fewer players means the pressure is on—every pause, every word gets scrutinized.
Why it works: With just one imposter, paranoia runs high but things stay fair. Toss in extra roles here and confusion takes over, so keep it simple.
This is the ideal group size—big enough for imposters to blend in, small enough for sharp-eyed players to catch a liar. And it’s a great chance to try out the Whiteboard role.
Why it works: Suddenly, vague answers might mean someone’s out of the loop, not up to no good. It throws suspicion in all directions and keeps everyone guessing.
With more players, one imposter won’t be enough. Time to add another, and maybe another Whiteboard for good measure.
Why it works: Two imposters can back each other up, toss blame around, and stir up chaos. Add a Whiteboard and you’ve got a real challenge for the crewmates.
Huge group? Bring on the tricks. Keeping track of roles on scraps of paper is a pain, but with the right tool, it’s effortless.
Why it works: Lots of roles mean mini conspiracies pop up all over the place. Forget about finding one liar—it’s a battle of whole teams trying to outsmart each other.
| Players | Imposters | Whiteboards | Vibe |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3–5 | 1 | 0 | Intense, personal |
| 6–9 | 1 | 1 | The classic game |
| 10–15 | 2 | 1–2 | Strategic chaos |
| 16+ | 3+ | 2+ | Epic conspiracies |
For 6 players, we recommend 1 Imposter and 1 Mr. White (Blank Role) for a balanced and exciting game.
A good rule of thumb is about 1 Imposter for every 5-6 players. Adding a Mr. White role helps balance the game without making it too hard for Civilians.
Let’s be honest: sorting out roles on paper takes the fun out before the game even starts. That’s exactly why we built our Imposter Game Generator.
Our tool handles everything instantly. Ready to run the most memorable game of The Imposter your friends have ever seen?
