Welcome to the world of Situation Puzzles! Also known as "Black Stories" or "Lateral Thinking Puzzles," these are spooky, mysterious, and often morbid riddles that you and your friends solve together. One person knows the dark secret, and the others must piece together the truth by asking only 'yes' or 'no' questions.

📖 The Ultimate Guide to Playing

The Basic Rules

The game requires two roles: one "Riddle Master" and one or more "Guessers."

  1. The Setup: The Riddle Master reads the short, strange story aloud to the Guessers. They then read the solution and keep it a secret.
  2. The Investigation: The Guessers take turns asking the Riddle Master questions.
  3. The Constraint: The Riddle Master can only answer with "Yes," "No," or "Irrelevant."
  4. The Goal: The game ends when the Guessers have uncovered the full story behind the riddle.

Example of Gameplay

Riddle: "A man is found dead in a room locked from the outside. On the table is a telephone. What happened?"

Solution: The man owed a large sum of money to the mob. As a final warning, they locked him in the room, giving him one last chance to raise the money via the telephone. When he failed to secure the funds, he knew they would kill him when they returned. Seeing no way out, he took his own life.

💡 Pro Tips for Players

For Guessers: Think Laterally!

  • Establish the Basics: Start with broad questions. Is anyone else involved? Did a crime occur? Is the location relevant?
  • Challenge Assumptions: The riddles are designed to mislead you. The "man" might not be a human. The "room" might be unusual.
  • Recap & Summarize: Periodically summarize what you know for sure. "Okay, so we know a death occurred, but it wasn't a murder, and the puddle is important."
  • Listen to Others: Build on the questions and answers of the other players.

For the Riddle Master: Be a Good Guide

  • The "Irrelevant" Answer: Use this answer honestly. If a detail truly has no bearing on the solution, say so. This prevents players from getting stuck on the wrong path.
  • Give Helpful Nudges: If the players are completely stuck, you can offer a small hint like, "You are focusing too much on the broken glass," or "Think about the definition of 'man'."
  • Confirm the Solution: Don't let the game end until the Guessers can clearly and correctly state the entire sequence of events.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the Riddle Master answers a question incorrectly?

The game relies on the Riddle Master's accuracy. If a mistake is made, they should correct it as soon as possible to avoid confusion.

How many people can play?

You need at least two people (one Master, one Guesser), but the game is most fun with a group of 3-6 players.
